RimWorld: A Story Generator

RimWorld is a unique story generator designed to co-author tragic, twisted, and triumphant narratives about imprisoned pirates, desperate colonists, starvation, and survival. The game controls the “random” events that the world throws at you, with every thunderstorm, pirate raid, and traveling salesman being a card dealt into your story by the AI Storyteller.

Choose Your Storyteller

There are several storytellers to choose from:

• Randy Random: Engages in unpredictable and chaotic events.
• Cassandra Classic: Builds rising tension over time.
• Phoebe Friendly: Focuses on positive outcomes and good events.

Your Colonists

Your colonists are not professional settlers; they are crash-landed survivors from a passenger liner destroyed in orbit. You may end up with a diverse group including:

• A nobleman
• An accountant
• A housewife

Acquire more colonists by:

• Capturing them in combat and recruiting them
• Buying them from slave traders
• Taking in refugees

This ensures that your colony will always be a motley crew, with each person’s background affecting gameplay.

Character Development

Each colonist has unique skills and limitations:

• A nobleman excels in social skills (recruiting prisoners, negotiating trade prices) but refuses physical labor.
• A farm oaf is experienced in growing food but lacks research skills.
• A nerdy scientist is proficient in research but struggles with social tasks.
• A genetically engineered assassin is a master of killing but has no other skills.

Colonists develop and destroy relationships, with each having opinions of others that influence interactions such as love, marriage, cheating, or conflict.

World Generation

The game generates a whole planet from pole to equator. You can choose to land your crash pods in various environments:

• Cold northern tundra
• Parched desert plain
• Temperate forest
• Steaming equatorial jungle

Each area presents unique challenges, including different animals, plants, diseases, temperatures, rainfall, mineral resources, and terrain.

Animal Interaction

You can tame and train animals that will impact your colony:

• Lovable pets to cheer up sad colonists
• Farm animals for milk and shearing
• Attack beasts to unleash upon enemies

Animals include cats, labrador retrievers, grizzly bears, camels, cougars, chinchillas, chickens, and exotic alien-like lifeforms.

Character Needs and Conditions

Colonists constantly assess their surroundings and respond to various conditions, such as:

• Hunger and fatigue
• Witnessing death
• Disrespectfully unburied corpses
• Being wounded or left in darkness
• Crammed living conditions
• Sleeping outside or in shared spaces

Stress can lead to lashing out or breakdowns. Each body part tracks wounds, infections, and chronic conditions, affecting character capabilities. For example:

• Eye injuries impair shooting or surgery.
• Wounded legs slow movement.

Other species also have unique body layouts, allowing for varied gameplay experiences.

Prosthetics and Medical Care

You can repair body parts with prosthetics ranging from primitive to advanced. For example:

• A peg leg allows movement after an injury but may slow the character down.
• An expensive bionic leg can transform a character into a superhuman runner.

Internal organs can also be extracted, sold, bought, and transplanted.

Game Features

• Manage colonists’ moods, needs, wounds, and illnesses.
• Fashion structures, weapons, and apparel from various materials.
• Tame and train pets, farm animals, and attack beasts.
• Watch colonists develop and break relationships.
• Engage in battles against pirate raiders, hostile tribes, and more.
